Medical Hypnotherapy

What is Medical Hypnosis?

Medical hypnosis in its simplest term is the utilisation of hypnosis in physical healing.

The most common use for hypnosis is to create shifts in people's learnt behaviour or patterns of negative belief to help them overcome difficulties experienced in the present day. Anxiety, depression, fears, phobias, weight issues, relationship problems all exist emotionally and psychologically in the person's mind and respond extraordinarily well to hypnosis.

Medical hypnosis however, deals with the physical being. This covers autoimmune disorders, chronic pain, physical trauma recovery, preparation for and from surgery and many more. It also deals with psychogenic disorders, these are physical illnesses that stem from emotional or mental stresses. Let's look at 7 examples of medical hypnosis:

Irritable Bowel Disease

Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory conditions of the colon and small intestine. The most common types are Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis - in both cases the areas become sore and inflamed, treatment consists of medication and sometimes surgery. Symptoms of both are unpleasant and often affect the sufferer's lifestyle. Hypnosis has been proven highly effective in managing the inflammation thus lessening the intensity and frequency of symptoms.

Cancer Symptoms Treatment

Cancer sufferers are put through an array of treatments such as chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy. These often leave the immune system depleted and the cancer sufferer tired and low, often depressed with associated symptoms such as nausea, weight loss, insomnia, skin problems, pain and fatigue. Hypnosis can help reduce treatment anxiety, improve emotional and psychological outlook and improve immune function as well as aid sleep and improve self-esteem.

An inflammatory condition with many types, the most common being plaque psoriasis. It is well known there is a link between psoriasis and emotional triggers such as stress and trauma. Flare-ups often happen when the person is going through a difficult time or a chronic emotional / psychological problem which they may / may not be aware of. Both clinical studies and my own experience show that 80% of psoriasis sufferers can get partial or complete remission of symptoms with hypnosis.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) causes persistent tiredness that doesn't go away with sleep or rest. Most people with CFS also have one or more other symptoms such as muscular pains, joint pains, disturbed sleep patterns, poor concentration and headaches. Stress/anxiety is common in sufferers of CFS. The physical cause is not known but hypnosis has shown to be particularly helpful in alleviating symptoms so that sufferers can lead a normal life.

Fibromyalgia (FMS) is a chronic condition that causes widespread muscular pain all over the body. It's classified as a connection tissue disorder but, like CFS, the cause is unknown. Also like CFS in many cases, the condition appears to be triggered by a physically or emotionally stressful event which makes hypnosis a safe and effective therapeutic treatment to deal with the pain and presenting emotional / psychological event / trauma.

Psychogenic Infertility

If you are medically infertile then all advice with regards to this must be adhered to by the relevant medical / health expert. If there is no medical reason for the infertility then the blockage may be coming from your mind. It's estimated that approximately 17% of couples will experience psychogenic infertility, the main reasons possibly being linked to psychological stressors. Hypnosis is excellent at removing the stressors and dealing with the emotional/psychological blockages

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS is a common gut disorder and the medical cause is unknown, but sufferers are usually people with an above average level of anxiety. This anxiety is believed to build up and manifest physically in the gut causing IBS. Interestingly, a systematic review found that IBS occurs in 51% of chronic fatigue syndrome patients and 49% of fibromyalgia patients, and psychiatric disorders were found to occur in 94% of IBS patients. This gives further credence to emotional / psychological causation of IBS.

In a study, which was presented in the Scandinavian Journal of Gastroenterology, 208 patients who had previously received hypnotherapy were examined. The results showed that 85 per cent of those who had been helped by hypnosis still felt the benefits of the treatment up to seven years later -- and that the majority still actively use the technique in their everyday lives.

In another study, Prof Peter Whorwell, Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology in the School of Medicine and Director of the South Manchester Functional Bowel Service used hypnosis as a stand-alone treatment for IBS on 250 patients who had had the condition for over two years and reported a 70% success rate, higher than any medication available and the hypnosis has no side-effects and offers a long term solution to IBS.

People often underestimate the power the subconscious mind has over the body, simply allowing nature to take its course. However, it's nothing to do with nature, it's the preset functions and autonomic programs stored in your subconscious that govern the body and all its processes including wound healing, immune function, steroidal and hormonal release, homeostasis (ensuring the body remains stable and regulated), blood pressure and heart function. Hypnosis acts with the subconscious mind and by using a variety of methods available to the fully trained and experienced hypnotherapist then positive physical change can be achieved.
